Eczema In Children

If most adults find it hard to deal with eczema, it is more difficult for eczema in children. It will take a lot of self control not to scratch the rash and make the problem worse.

It will take a whole lot of effort from the children not to be bothered by it.  It will also take a lot of patience from the parents for them not to mind all the crying and wailing brought on by the itchy and somewhat painful feeling brought on by eczema.

Thus, eczema in children is definitely worse than what the adults have.

Children that have eczema usually have atopic dermatitis. It is sometimes called infantile eczema as it happens mostly to infants and children.

Atopic dermatitis is generally caused by allergies. Some doctors have concluded that eczema in children are usually passed on from parent to child. Thus, genes or the biological make-up of the child has a lot to do why the kid has eczema.

However, eczema in children may also be caused by too much heat or emotional stress.  Not to worry though, because kids who have them now will not have them when they are already teenagers.

So when your child is between 2 – 6 months of age, kid’s eczema can be itchy and dry. The affected area of the skin is red and there will be small bumps on the cheeks, forehead and scalp.  It may spread to the arms and legs, trunk.

Do not let your children scratch the affected area…

When the child gets older, the rash becomes less scalier but the skin is going to be very itchy and dry.   Do not let your children scratch the affected area as it will tend to get worse if they do.  The skin may become thick and leathery.

Scratching may also lead for the affected area to become somewhat brownish.

The bad news is eczema in children disappears after several months and sometimes even a number of years.  For most of the cases observed, it usually improves by the time the child is five.

But expect to for the child to get flare-ups during early adulthood.  The good news is eczema is definitely not contagious. Thus, there is no need for people to keep their distance because it is not viral nor is it airborne.

Since eczema in children is most probably inherited, one cannot necessarily avoid having it. What a parent can do is to see to it that it does not re-occur.

So if possible do not let the following allergens come into contact with your child:  pollen, dust, mold, animal dander, dry winter air, harsh saps and detergents, wool, skin care products that are too strong, tobacco smoke, dairy products and so many others.

So parents do help your child to cope with the skin condition.  Remember the rash may go away but the emotional trauma that one gets from the eczema can be another problem that you will have to deal with later on.

If you have to deal with the problem of eczema in children, it can be a troubling issue. But proper treatment can allow a child to live a fruitful childhood without all the scratching and tears.
